5 Rival Premier League players who could walk into Man City’s starting line up

Posted on August 03, 2017 by Admin

Pep Guardiola arrived at the Etihad last season with perhaps the biggest reputation in European football. His first season was a real baptism of fire. At one stage,Man  City were in real danger of missing out on the top four. They really need to improve this season if they want to lift the league title again. They have been very active in the transfer market in the close season. The big question is, how will Pep gel all of these new players together? For a further clue, take a look at these football odds to see how the betting firms rate City’s chances this season.

City’s nearest rivals have some stellar names too. We look at who the top five are, and why they would get into the City starting line up.

1. David de Gea

It hasn’t been a secret that City have struggled in the goalkeeping position since Pep took over. Joe Hart was farmed out to Torino and Willy Caballero and Claudio Bravo have both failed to live up to expectations. The issue seems to be with what Pep expects his keepers to do. Any keeper that fails to distribute the ball rapidly and effectively in a kind of “deep sweeper” position quickly gets axed. David de Gea would be a perfect fit. His stats are also in keeping with what Guardiola wants. He has made no fewer than 70 “sweeper passes” and 1283 accurate long passes in his career at United.

2. Eden Hazard

City are the best team in the league offensively. However, Pep must cast an envious eye at Stamford Bridge and wished that he had several of their players. What team in the Premier League would turn down the chance to take the mercurial Belgian Eden Hazard?

There were times last season when City failed to penetrate teams that stubbornly defended. Hazard would be a massive signing and would fit City’s slick style quite well. He created no fewer than 89 chances last season and scored 16 goals. However, it is the space that he creates by running at defenders that would be the biggest asset for City and for players like Silva and Aguero.

3. Harry Kane

Top English players are highly valued in the Premier League. This is because of the current UEFA ruling regarding the number of home grown players. The top teams need the best English players. This was a major factor behind why Pep chose to go in for Kyle Walker. Another big English signing would be Harry Kane.

While Kane is still very early in his career, his transfer value would be exceptionally high. How long Spurs can keep him is anyone’s guess? The predatory instincts that he possesses have led to back to back Golden Boot awards in the Premier League. To get that award means that you have beaten the likes of Costa, Aguero, Lukaku, Sanchez and Ibrahimovic. He is up there with the very best and he is English, Pep would take him without hesitation.

4. David Luiz

The jury was out on the curly haired Brazilian for quite some time when he first arrived in England. However, he has won the league title and Champions League in his time at Chelsea. City have struggled defensively since Guardiola took over. John Stones is still work in progress and needs some top quality defenders alongside him.

Luiz is the sort of classy ball player that Pep likes even though he is prone to the odd mistake. His free kicks are another plus point and would give City some valuable options in that area.

5. Alexis Sanchez

This final one should come as no surprise to anyone. At the time of writing, Guardiola is attempting to take Sanchez to Manchester City. He worked with him at Barcelona. He knows full well how to get the best out of the unsettled but brilliant Chilean. Sanchez scored 24 goals last season and created 78 chances. That sort of return would do very nicely at the Etihad. This is especially the case seeing as they struggled to convert many of their chances last term.
