Could Ronaldo be the next Man City transfer hinted at by Pellegrini?

It would be the biggest story of this summer transfer window if Manuel Pellegrini could persuade Cristiano Ronaldo to sign for Manchester City. According to media reports, City are prepared to offer the Portuguese star £300,000 a week to swap the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid for the Etihad stadium in Manchester.

At first sight, this transfer rumour seems ridiculous, but there are certain reasons to think again. Last season, Ronaldo said publicly that he was not happy at Real Madrid. He has also declined the offer a of a new contract with the Spanish giants on a few occassions and spoken about how happy he was in the Premier League, although that was with red mob at Old Trafford. A lot of Ronaldo’s connection with United was with Ferguson, though, and he is not in charge anymore.

Don’t forget that Pellegrini was the manager of Real Madrid when they signed the striker back in 2009, and Ronaldo was a lot happier at the club in his first season, scoring 33 goals and helping Madrid to their higest ever points total in La Liga up to that point. The only problem was that Barcelona were on fire and pipped them to the title by three points, but he has worked successfully with the new City boss before.

The biggest stumbling block to the deal is not United, because they could not afford the transfer fee, but Real Madrid. The president Florentino Perez has said many times that he would not sell Ronaldo, but there are just two years remaining on his contract, and even Real Madrid would find it hard to swallow an £80 million loss.

Madrid are already seeking a replacement for Ronaldo, and Gareth Bale from Tottenham is their target. If they can persuade Tottenham to sell, then Perez could well decide to take the money now for Ronaldo, but without Bale, the Madrid fans would not stand for it.

Manuel Pellegrini and the Man City squad are in South Africa at the minute for the first part of pre-season, and the Chilean dropped a little hint that there could be another arrival or two coming soon. I doubt that it will be Ronaldo, although there is plenty of time left before the window closes, so let’s hope that Tottenham do us a favour.
