Guardiola goes 3 at the back with Man City XI for Chelsea

Posted on December 03, 2016 by Admin

As well as being the battle between two football teams full of quality and expensively arrayed players, the Premier League clash between Man City and Chelsea has been billed as a test of the tactical nous of two of the best managers in the game today.

One of the biggest talking points of recent weeks in the EPL is the way that Chelsea have flourished since Antonio Conte changed from their previous formation to playing a back three instead of four. That is something that we have seen at times from City but it is not the usual formation preferred by Pep Guardiola, but he has gone with it today, clearly hoping to negate any advantage that the system might give to the visitors.

The three defenders chosen to operate it are John Stones, Otamendi and Kolarov and in front of them we have the extra protection afforded by Fernandinho and Gundogan, with Sane and Silva to provide width and creativity. Up front alongside Aguero we have the pace of Navas and the brilliance of De Bruyne.

Stones, Otamendi, Kolarov
Sane, Fernandinho, Gundogan, Silva
Navas, Aguero, De Bruyne

subs: Bacary Sagna, Pablo Zabaleta, Fernando, Willy Caballero, Gael Clichy, Yaya Toure, Kelechi Iheanacho.

I would have liked to see Toure in from the start but he is a good option for Pep on the bench. Can City stop Chelsea’s momentum or go one further and get the three points to put us back in pole position in this tightest of title races?
