When you look at the way the Citizens have been playing this season, some rival fans could be excused for wondering why they would be on the lookout for any new players at all. However, as we all know, a manager’s work is never done, and they’re always looking for ways to strengthen their team.

During the first half of the season, Pep Guardiola did express some concerns about the depth of his defence, and it wasn’t a huge surprise when he decided to target what has been a problem area for the side. In what was a major signing for the club, they acquired the signature of Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao for a reported fee of £65 million.

City were previously interested in a deal for Laporte back in 2016 and he was extremely close to joining the club, but the manager felt he wasn’t quite ready at the time and backed out of the move. Now, Guardiola feels that he’s where he needs to be as a player, and the time is right for the French international to become a Sky Blue. When asked what he admired about the 23-year old, the coach said his quality with the ball and strength in the air were two of his best attributes. He is fast down the flanks, experienced with the ball, and the perfect age to build a long career at Manchester City.

The move has come at a critical time for the club, with star playmaker Leroy Sane ruled out for six or seven weeks with ankle ligament damage. The attacker suffered the injury in Man City’s FA Cup win at Cardiff, and the squad will undoubtedly miss his presence on the pitch after his impressive performances so far this season. His fellow German teammates will also be praying for a speedy recovery, with the World Cup looming just around the corner. Germany are currently the favourites at 9/2 to win the tournament according to international sports betting, and a player of Sane’s calibre would be sorely missed.

Laporte has now become the second most expensive defender in history, and has taken City’s massive spending spree on defenders in the last few years, to over £300 million. Only Virgil van Dijk, who made the move to Liverpool from Southampton cost more, after his staggering £75 million transfer in January.

The Frenchman made his debut back in 2012 in La Liga, playing under a coach that Guardiola has much respect for, Marcelo Bielsa. He quickly became one of the competition’s most exciting young prospects, and a move to a bigger club in the future was expected by most pundits. He has that attacking defensive mind that Pep is a huge fan of, and he could be easily pushing Stones for a starting spot alongside Otamendi in the upcoming months.
