Even though Manchester City have failed to get out of the group stages of the Champions League for two years in a row, the manager of their opponents tonight is not taking them lightly and has declared them to be one of the strongest teams in the competition. And Pep Guardiola certainly knows what he is talking about, having won the competition twice in his first three years as manager of Barcelona.

Having moved to last season’s winners Bayern Munich, there is a lot of expectation for him to repeat his and their feat this year, but he is wary of playing Man City tonight, and has even suggested that we could do something similar to what Borussia Dortmund did last season. The German side that Bayern beat in the final, and they were a bit unlucky to lose, had struggled like City to get out of the groups before.

Guardiola said, “City are one of the biggest clubs in Europe – I’m 100 percent confident they will get through to the next round.

“So Manchester City will be one of the toughest, toughest, toughest teams in the next round.

“It’s the same with what happened in Borussia Dortmund last season. Last season was the first time they qualified for the next round, and they got to the final.”

He went on to talk about the new City boss Manuel Pellegrini, who he knows well fron his time in Spain’s La Liga, praising him for the style of football he always produces, as well as the excellent results he has managed in Europe.

Well thanks for the pep talk, Guardiola, but that doesn’t mean we are going to go easy on you tonight.
