Man City should not worry about transfer target Pepe’s reputation.

When the new Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini took over as the coach of Real Madrid back in 2009, he had a big problem to deal with, in the shape of the Portuguese centre back Pepe. The defender had missed the end of the previous season for an astonishing incident where he completely lost it; kicking, stamping and punching a number of the opposing team’s players and getting banned for 10 games.

Pellegrini recognized his great ability, however, and started to instill discipline, and now he is keen to bring the 30-year old to the English Premier League to form a partnership with Vincent Kompany, according to The Mirror. Pepe was performing well under Pellegrini until a cruciate ligament problem cut short his season. Under Mourinho, his more reckless side came to the fore again, probably with Mourinho’s blessing and his reputation as a thug was secured. However, he was much calmer last season and seemed to reject Mourinho’s over aggressive way of playing, leading to a breakdown in relations between the two.

There is talk of a £20 million transfer fee if City want him from Real Madrid, which is simply ludicrous, but for a decent price, he could be a good signing, provided that Pellegrini can keep a lid on his temper. I know that a lot of City fans will not want this move, but Pepe is a fantastic defender with a good few seasons left in him. With Pellegrini planning to play more expansively next season, it is even more important to have quick and experienced defenders in case of counter attacks, and Pepe is one of the best.
