Kevin De Bruyne Continues to be the Premier League’s Standout Player

Following Man City’s 3-1 success over Arsenal on November 5, Sky Sports released their latest power rankings, with both Fernandinho and Kevin De Bruyne sitting top of the list ahead of Liverpool’s Mo Salah and, somewhat surprisingly, Burnley’s Nick Pope. The power rankings reflect players’ current form, basing their result on their last five appearances and De Bruyne remains one of the league’s most in-form players.

The Belgian has netted three times this campaign, including crucial strikes against Chelsea and Man City and he’s laid on six assists for his teammates. The former KRC Genk man offers Pep Guardiola’s side versatility and he simply loves having the ball at his feet. Despite his outstanding ability in the final third, he has also been carrying out his defensive duties with aplomb this season with over three interceptions per game and a sharp decrease in the amount of fouls committed by the 26-year-old.

He is head and shoulders above almost every other attacking midfielder in the league and is already odds-on to be the PFA Player of the Year. His goal against the Gunners was City’s 50th strike this season and the Citizens look unstoppable at the summit. Pep’s side embarked upon a nine-match winning run going into the November international break and they have been priced up at 12/1 in the Premier League betting markets to remain unbeaten throughout the entire campaign.

Against Arsenal, he put in four crosses, created two chances and scored the opening goal to break the deadlock. He’s also been a key part of the squad in the Champions League where City have progressed to the last 16, after beating Napoli 4-2 at Stadio San Paolo on November 1.

De Bruyne has completed an average of 70 passes per match compared to just 54 during the 2016-17 campaign and boasts an 83% success rate when looking for a teammate. His fine performances have helped his side create plenty of momentum as they aim to dominate games under the former Barcelona boss.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has previously branded the midfielder a “complete player” and it is rumoured that the Manchester City players were singing his name when he entered the dressing room following his winning strike against the Blues.

He’s been ably assisted by the classy David Silva and the potent duo of Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero who have all helped City to their unbeaten start in the Premier League but it’s De Bruyne who has taken the majority of the plaudits.

He was awarded the Etihad Player of the Month for October and his performances continue to light up the Premier League and get City fans on their feet. He has all the attributes of an all-around performer and the arrival of Pep Guardiola has certainly helped bring the best out of the Drongen-born star.

He can be considered a student of the game and he is always striving for improvement, analysing his own performances and picking it apart. He is only likely to get even better throughout the campaign and on current form, he is head and shoulders above every other player in the English top flight.
